Kd wearing a totobobo mask on his daily bike commute to school to combat the hazy days. He says that he looks like a jet fighter pilot. :-) "

I came across Totobobo while searching for a filter to combat the haze in Penang. I wanted to continue cycling when the haze came, and didn’t want to stop because of lung cancer worries. Googling for Cycling Mask returns the popular Respo Mask as the top search, but further down is where I found Totobobo. I was initially attracted by the entry price. It is much cheaper than Respo and much more breathable.
To no surprise, the filter darks up as reported by the London Cyclist. When I put the filter under a microscope, I could see all the tiny carbon particles sticking to the fiber of the filter. The filters have electrostatic charges and this helps it to attracts the carbon particles. I have also taken a photo of the filter after 4.2hrs of usage. This is where I stop and change the filter as I believe, the filter looses the filtering efficiency as more and more particles are getting through.
I tried to improve the filter efficiency by using two 92% filter back to back. My theory is, I can get a filter efficiency up to 99.35% (92% + [8%x0.92]). Though I could not prove 99.35% efficiency, but I did notice that the second layer of filter do darkens quite significantly, and I am definitely getting a filtering efficiency of more than 92%. The caveat in doing this is that I broke the filter holding clips because the thickness of the two layers of filter.
I am horrid by the carbon particles that goes into my lung. Without this filter, I would have been inhaling the particles and these tiny particles may get traps in the inner catacombs of my lung.  Not sure what long term damage this could do to my lungs, but it is better not to have them there.  Totobobo is now my cycling companion, together with my gloves, shoe and helmet.

Why do you choose Totobobo mask:

by INFO on AUGUST 10, 2012
There are many reasons to choose Totobobo mask. For example, Dr. Anil Simhadri MB MChir (Cambridge) MRCP (London) from UK, he told us:
Dr. Anil Simhadri MB MChir (Cambridge) MRCP (London) from UK
Dr. Anil Simhadri from UK use Totobobo mask to remove the “trigger” for asthma

I am a doctor /physician in the UK at UCL, and bike daily in london to work using totobobo mask. I also suffer from asthma using a ventolin inhaler. I have been using totobobo masks since feb 2010 when I placed my first order and find them very useful. My cycling performance with regard to speed of cycling has improved. Previously I might cycle 6 miles in 1 hour. Now I cycle 6 miles in 50 minutes. The mask helps improve my control of asthma. Asthma is a disease of airway hyper-responsivesness. The tracheal airways are hyper-responsive to various triggers. Pollutants in the air as in inner city london can trigger the airways to constrict or narrow. Totobobo masks prevent these pollutants reaching the airways and so help remove the “trigger” for asthma.
Chuck Stefanato, a Scrollsawer from Canada told us about this:
I purchased the mask because of the review by Steve Good at the Scrollsaw Workshop. In it he stated that it was very comfortable and did not fog up glasses. Since using it I have to agree, it is very comfortable and you don’t even know you are wearing it. I have asthma and the fine sawdust created by the scroll saw affects it, but using the mask eliminates the asthma attacks. I was using disposable masks previously with limited results, but the Totobobo mask beats them all.
Ken Henschel from Israel:
The reason I bought the mask is because I have asthma. However I enjoy walking to work, which is 5 kilometers (3 miles) from my home. There is a lot of vehicular traffic. I have caught bronchitis and am still coughing. I am hoping to protect my lungs and reduce the burden on my immune system.
Jessica Gibbs from USA:
I am training for a marathon in Chicago and have been getting very sick from the train, bus, truck, car, cigarette and industry fumes. I am a dental student so I have access to lots of different masks, but I didn’t feel any of them did anything when I ran. During the day I constantly taste diesel from the run the night before. I did a lot of searching about the Totobobo mask and it looks like it should help. As a student it’s a lot more money than I can spend, but I don’t want to give up running. I plan on wearing the mask for every run and race
Roger July 4, 2012 at 1:17 am
I chose TOTOBOBO because I ride all over New York City and have developed a terrible lung irritation because of the pollution. From everything I read, this seemed like the best mask both for protection and comfort.
Shady July 4, 2012 at 7:22 am
I had to buy another pair of Totobobo masks because I could feel the difference riding in LA after using them for a few weeks (then losing them!). After living in Cairo, I developed some respiratory issues that have made my lungs sensitive to pollution. These keep me from feeling nasty on my daily bike commute through traffic in Los Angeles.
Jose July 5, 2012 at 10:50 pm
I chose totobobo mask because I used to walk to work along a 8 ways road every day. It’s full of cars and buses, and the smell is relly bad. So I can’t imagine how much pollution is generated there.
I will use it also for any other walking in Madrid. I expect that I can get rid of the itchy throat!
Fran Fitzsimon July 6, 2012 at 5:36 am
I am attending a week-long pastel class with approx. 12 other pastelists. By mid-week there is so much pastel dust in the air that you start to feel it’s affects. I am so happy to have found the solution to this problem with your mask. THANK YOU!
Michael stock July 6, 2012 at 4:04 pm
I chose Totobobo for London cycling because the filters are good and one of the mask options only covers the mouth which gives some flexibility. The bigger picture is that thanks to Campaign for Clean Air in London http://cleanairinlondon.org/ we now all know how poisonous the air is and we have to protect ourselves as best we can.
Matthew Ingram July 6, 2012 at 6:35 pm
Heard marvellous things about this filters. Detest my Respro Techno mask!
Sunell July 8, 2012 at 11:08 pm
I just ordered my Totobobo mask!
I’m looking forward to using it because I live in Taiwan and either cycle or take a scooter to and from work. I have constant battles with throat infections and my breathing, both when I’m cycling and at rest. I’ve tried other masks, but found them to be either too uncomfortable, with the headband sliding down all the time and definitely too hot for this climate. I also found that they did not ‘breathe’ enough and that there was too much condensation.
I read some bloggers’ comments about Totobobo and also clicked through the website. Especially in this climate, I look forward to having a mask that is made from an anti-bacterial material and allow maximum airflow.
I’ll post some feedback after the first month of using it
RJ July 10, 2012 at 8:18 am
I chose Totobobo because I regularly walk to work through a congested downtown loaded with large idling trucks at stop lights and the air quality is terrible.
When I watch the local weather on The Weather Channel, often our air quality is bad due to pollen & particulates.
The other masks out there seem so clunky and industrial compared to the sleekness and light weight of the Totobobo.
I feel very good about incorporating this product into my active lifestyle.
Info July 10, 2012 at 9:18 pm
Wow, thanks all for providing your valuable feedback. It looks like most of you get the Totobobo masks for cycling and walking.
Nicole July 11, 2012 at 6:49 am
I searched several sites to find a mask that could filter heavy air pollution and chose Totobobo biker masks because the info on the site is well written and from diverse sources. The details helped me choose the mask I needed… now it remains to be seen how H O T I’ll feel wearing the mask in India during the summer- hmmm. Anyway, thanks for a great site.
Info July 11, 2012 at 6:54 am
Hi Nicole, did you buy from our site directly? Which model have you bought?
Poonam Chandra July 11, 2012 at 9:13 am
I chose to order Totobobo mark because next month we are moving to India for a few years and pollution levels are sky high there. Totobobo gives us hope to keep ourselves pollution free.
Elena Yuan July 11, 2012 at 10:44 pm
Beijing’s air is simply un-breathable sometimes; I’ve searched through most of the anti-pollution masks available locally but couldn’t find anything to my liking. TOTOBOBO is recommended on the US embassy in China (Beijing)’s webpages. This is the same website giving out hourly pollution level updates to everyone. I think this is worth a try.
Info July 11, 2012 at 10:47 pm
Poonam, hope to hear from you after you have some experience using our mask.
Elena, thanks for your feedback. Wow, can you share the link from US embassy in China?

Being an asthma sufferer who is now planning on cycling a distance to work through the busy, smoggy streets of London, I felt I needed to protect my lungs from the daily polution. Doing quite a bit of research I have found that totobobo face mask offer the top protection I need, along with being customisable and well priced.
Liam July 13, 2012 at 1:37 am
I’ve chosen to buy a totobobo mask for my mum who lives and cycles regularly in Jakarta. She tells me how bad the air pollution is, so I wanted to get her something that could really benefit her health. I have a respro mask, but have found it to restrict my breathing. Based on the reviews, totobobo doesn’t have the same problems. Fingers crossed that works out to be true for my mum!
Robin Baumgarten July 17, 2012 at 10:24 pm
I’m cycling through London, and although doing sport is healthy, many of the benefits might be canceled out because of the air pollution i’m breathing in next to all the car exhausts. After researching on the Internet, the totobobo filters came away ahead, so I ordered them straight away!
Thana July 19, 2012 at 4:18 pm
I started cycling about a month ago. Having to cycle from the outskirt of Bangkok to the center of downtown regularly exposes me to a lot of air pollution, mostly from the exhaust of motor vehicles. The worst is the bus that sometimes blows black smoke in my face. The masks I found available for sales here aren’t just good enough…they don’t fit well and I can’t breath with it on. I don’t want to risk having respiratory diseases so I better get a good quality mask and get it soon. Prevention is better than cure…and cheaper as well.
Ron Fisher July 23, 2012 at 3:37 am
After a lot of research on your site and many other we decided this was the mask to try at Burning Man.
Veteran burners recommended them and we will see how they work out in a dust storm on the Playa!
I also bike to work in Vancouver BC and as a past smoker my lungs need all the help they can get.
My partner is an artist and want to try them in her studio. Thanks
Ian July 26, 2012 at 7:25 am
I chose the Totobobo for a good fitting mask after receiving a kidney transplant. It has better air flow that most masks that I have seen and once I am healed I will continue to wear it got taekwondo. I should wear a good mask for about two years after transplant and being able to see the fit, and change the filters is very important to me.

Just ordered my mask.
I’ve been researching masks to bring to Burning Man.
This year is due to be the worst ever for dust storms, due to the drought.
I am looking forward to testing out my mask at Black Rock City!
Sara in China July 28, 2012 at 4:18 pm
I’ve been biking in a large city in China for the past two years, often resulting in a cough that lasts for months. There is the constant tearing down of buildings and new construction going on. I am looking forward to receiving Totobobo masks for both my husband and me! Now can you make one for my dog???
Pascal July 28, 2012 at 10:54 pm
I chose the totobobo mask because I move from the countryside of Germany to a mega city in China. I just want to keep my lung as clean and good in shape as they are now .
Waro July 31, 2012 at 10:30 pm
i live in BKK and occasionally bike on the road traffic and air pollution. i searched the mask to protect my breath from any pollutants in the air and luckily me i found TOTOBOBO that looks like 3M mask and show a pad test in BKK. and then i ordered and look forward to get them in soon.
Max Raymond August 3, 2012 at 4:33 am
I’m a cyclist in London and I love using my bike to get around. For me the daily commute is wonderful, see the city getting the exercise. I can’t get enough. However I really hate breathing traffic fumes be it a harsh blast from a bus, an iggnorent driver reving up in my face or some very simple mined fock who remove the catalytic converters from their engines (disgusting
Not to mention illegal) I choose these mask after being dissatisfied with another brand and reading many great reviews in London cycling media. You will breath easy and gasp at the amount of rubbish that collects in the filters. Ride safe peeps.
Bianka August 4, 2012 at 6:41 am
I have moved from Ilha Grande, an island in Brazil with no cars and no pollution, straight to New York City. Me and my 6 years old daughter bike all the time. The masks will be a must in our lives!

Waro, I’ve been in Bangkok, the air is no joke! Glad you found us!
Hi Max, great that you cycle commute! this is the area we try to encourage. Cyclist should be able to enjoy the ride with clean air. It is not fair for cyclist who do not produce any pollution suffer from all the craps from vehicular pollution!

I am a full time wood turner. I chose your mask because I am now using a Triton Respirator, but because they are no longer manufactured I can not get any spare parts, and I am hoping your mask will be a suitable replacement.

I ordered a Totobobo Cyclist Supercool package just now. It is a present for my wife. She cycles daily in Lisbon and dislikes the pollution from traffic – particularly when she gets stuck behind buses.
We did some research on cycling masks and the testimonials we found made us choose the Totobobo supercool over other alternatives (either more expensive or that seemed to be poor quality). I am quite confident she will like it!
3Rob August 19, 2012 at 8:52 pm
I thought I’d give the mask a try. I cycle in London and have tried other masks, but they always fogged up my glasses and made me very hot. let’s see what the Super Cool can do!

It has been two years since I first use totobobo mask. Generally, I’m satisfy eith the quality of the mask. I knew totobobo mask from my bike to work community (b2w indonesia), buy first kit from them and use it every since. For me, totobobo mask very effective to reduce polluted air get into my lungs. And also, the mask is light and compact enough to be put in my work bag. I never get breathing problem. I thank totobobo to keep me healthy even have to break through terrible traffic every day.

I live in London and ride everywhere but grow tired of smoking the big red four wheeled diesel pipe. Bring me sweet sweet filtered air please.
PabloFlores August 11, 2012 at 3:53 am
I Choose Totobobo because it seems more appropriate for highspeed cycling ride trought the city. I´m from Santiago of Chile, a big city with a lot of Smog, also the Spring is comming and the pollen from the trees plus the pollution kill my lungs. I´m already waiting for the mask!

From London, UK
Author: Marcus K
Hi,

For the record I bought a totobobo mask about 4 months back (the one that covers mouth only). Delivery was quick and I bought about 60 odd of the 92% filters. It has made a MASSIVE difference to my commute - before I used to have a very sore throat by the end of the week. Even when I'm not cycling in London (and I don't have the mask on) I notice a clear difference.

I would say a very good investment (surprisingly hard wearing given that it looks quite flimsy when it arrives). The filters go black in just over a week for me and it is quite shocking how much dirt they seem to pick up.

I cycle fast and I would say it was initially difficult to get the breathing right but its good and the fact that it doesn't cover your nose means that your glasses won't fog up. If you feel silly wearing it just get one of those neck bandana things (in Evans for about 13 quid) they cover the whole mask (without slipping down) and dry quickly and easily.

Doctor review on Totobobo Mask:
That’s the question that Beijing TimeOut set off to find out..
“There are many wonderful things about Beijing, but the air isn’t one of them. Even on a supposedly blue-sky day, air-quality index (AQI) readings for particulate matter (PM) of 2.5 micrometres – those small enough to get into the bloodstream and do damage to the respiratory system – can be in the hundreds. On really bad days, the AQI pushes past the 500 limit; a level that’s officially ‘hazardous’ or ‘beyond index’, but now known locally (thanks to a mischievous tweet from the US Embassy) as ‘crazy bad’.”
Although the risk is not as high as some people may think, there are certain groups of people should take note and avoid going out on “bad air day”, these includes children (especially infant and toddlers), patients with asthma or chronic coughs, or people with pre-conditions that make them susceptible heart attack or stroke.
When it comes to air filter mask for protection, this is what Dr Richard Saint Cyr, a family medicine doctor at Beijing United Family Hospital said:

Don’t just get a surgical mask,’ says Dr Saint Cyr. ‘The best ones are rated N95, which literally means 95 percent of air particles smaller than PM0.3 are filtered out. The Respro cycling masks work really well, but personally I like the Totobobo masks.’

See full article here: http://www.timeoutbeijing.com/features/Blogs/15375/Is-Beijing-air-as-bad-as-you-think.html

Some of our customers feedback on why they chose us:

From UK, Jenny:

The ways Totobobo mask improves on the prvious ones I have used are:

See-through : ie does not intimidate other people. This is not my imagination – when my husband attempted to buy one famous brand cycling mask for me in a nearby city he was told they had to send away for them on special order because the local gangsters were using them to avoid being identified (!).

The filters change colour when dirty – no guessing.

filters do not need to be washed which impairs their effectiveness.

The air readily comes through the filter rather than through a two-way valve (which inevitably lets in some dirt etc)

The mask fits very snugly around my face so my spectacles don’t steam up and air does not get in.

The mouth and nose are not in contact with the material so it is more comfortable to wear.

The construction material means the mask can be washed thus cutting down bacterial build up.

The only downside is that I am finding difficulty actually putting it on, but I am sure I will master this in time.

From Korea, Ian Chow:

I chose Totobobo after years of waiting and searching for a filtration breather. There hasn't been one on the market I liked. I checked out respro, but neoprene turns me off, especially in the summer time - it's way too hot.

Totobobo looks like it would be warm too, because of the plastic, but atleast it doesnt wrap around the entire head. And reviews has said there is pratically no decrease in breathing restriction which is a really good plus, since I do heavy cardio outside, predominantly mountain biking and rock climbing. Also the reviews has said it's pretty close to the N95 mask, which is pretty awesome with the virtually-non-restricted-breathing-filters.

And on top of that, living in Seoul, now, the air quality is absolutely horrendous, plus in the summer time this phenomenon called "Yellow Dust" - sand picked up from the Gobi dessert and carried through China, picking up the pollutants, dumps in Seoul. Since I started living here, I've been getting sick way more often, usually in spring in summer when the air quality is at its worst. I'm hoping Totobobo will change all that.

Plus, I'm travelling soon to other polluted metropolis, like Mumbai in India.

From Amsterdam, Netherlands, Vincent:

I became interested in anti-pollution nose/mouth filters, since my rides on the bicycle through Amsterdam are far from pleasant because of exhaust fumes from diesel and two-stroke (scooters) engines and all kinds of aerosols.
A quick search with Google summed up a couple of promising solutions, from which I liked Totobobo the best. Mostly, because of it's (apparent) simplicity and favorable comments - also good value for money, as it seems.

Anyway, the only way is to find out in practice, so I ordered the Supercool mask ... I hope to receive them soon :)

From Poland, Warsaw, Francesco

I choose Totobobo mask for few reasons, first because in Warsaw is very polluted expecially where I live in centre, second here in Poland they don't sell anywhere (online or in stores) anti-pollution mask and most of the Polish people don't know it, third I've read good reviews about your product and the last reason is because the filters are cheaper than other brands.

From USA, Donna:

You asked why I chose Totobobo .I suffer from chemical sensitiviy. and allergies. When I am exposed to environmental molds or highway fumes I develop extreme brain fog which lasts for several days.

Initially I tried the 3M mask - too hard to breathe; then Respro -somewhat better but still unpleasant to wear for any period of time. I have been using I Can Breathe for several years - comfortable but it is impossible to maintain a seal - the fit is so poor I often become ill anyway.

I became unusually ill just a few days ago and while online searching for a new remedy I came upon Totobobo - the reviews are wonderful. I am confident that it will give me the freedom and effectiveness for which I have been searching. Can't wait to try it!

Your advertising stresses use by those in extremely polluted areas, travelers, and by artists and woodworkers. Perhaps you should also include reference to the growing populations of chemically sensitive people to be found even in the much less polluted parts of the world.

I’m tired of moping over my pollution-induced hacking cough. I refuse to hide inside my apartment any longer. I have six more weeks here, and damn it, I am going to have fun, I am going to explore this city, and I am going to do it without getting lung cancer.
Besides, what am I so worried about, anyway? This city is full of rainbows:

The good news is that I’ve found a way to save my trip, thanks to the Totobobo Mask I bought yesterday for 180 yuan. It has two filters that trap undesirable particulates down to 0.3 microns in diameter, and filter out 92-96% of unhealthy particles in the air, including pollution and viruses. I can actually smell fresh air when I inhale. I can bike. I can walk outside to buy groceries. And I may look like a post-apocalyptic piglet when I’m wearing it, but I don’t care, because I feel like a functioning human being again!
So, I kind of apologize for the complaining last time. I may have to wear a freaky mask now, but I am going to give this city another chance.
Today, with mask firmly attached, I went out with Juanes for a 20-mile ride (complete route here), braving an AQI of 220* .
*An air quality index of 220 is considered “Moderately Polluted” according to the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection, which I like to think of as “humans should probably fucking stay indoors”

Yep… I’m never taking this thing off again.
